Harmonic cOS™

Transforming Broadband Networks

From traditional cable access to virtualized and cloud-native broadband, Creative Solutions and Harmonic help operators modernize access networks with the cOS platform.

The cOS platform

One software platform for cable and fiber access.

Harmonic cOS virtualizes broadband access so operators can scale capacity, evolve DOCSIS and add fiber without re-building the headend.

  • Cloud-native vCMTS

cOS runs the cable modem termination function as software on commercial off-the-shelf servers or in the cloud — replacing dedicated chassis hardware.

  • DOCSIS 3.1 → DOCSIS 4.0

Full DOCSIS 3.1 today, with a software path to Unified DOCSIS 4.0 — supporting both FDX and Extended Spectrum options.

  • Distributed Access

Centralized or Distributed Access Architecture, Remote PHY and remote edge devices managed from the same platform.

  • Fiber & PON

GPON, XGS-PON and Combo PON alongside DOCSIS, so operators can move to fiber street by street on one broadband core.

  • cOS Central

Cloud-based management, monitoring and analytics that give operations teams one view of cable and fiber assets.

  • Operational efficiency

Software upgrades, automation and a smaller physical footprint in the headend — less space, power and cooling.

Architecture

Centralized or distributed. DOCSIS or fiber.

cOS separates software from hardware: the vCMTS core runs on standard servers or cloud infrastructure, while Remote PHY devices and remote OLTs extend services to the edge of the network.

FAQ

Harmonic — frequently asked questions

What is Harmonic cOS?

Harmonic cOS (formerly CableOS) is a cloud-native broadband platform. It runs the cable modem termination system as software (vCMTS) on standard servers or in the cloud, and supports DOCSIS 3.1, Unified DOCSIS 4.0 and fiber access (GPON, XGS-PON) on one platform.

What is a vCMTS?

A virtual CMTS runs the functions of a cable modem termination system as software on commercial off-the-shelf servers instead of dedicated chassis hardware. Operators scale capacity and add features through software, with a smaller footprint in the headend.

What is Remote PHY and Distributed Access Architecture (DAA)?

In a Distributed Access Architecture, the physical layer (PHY) moves from the headend into nodes in the field, connected over digital Ethernet/IP fiber links. Remote PHY is the most common DAA approach for DOCSIS networks. It improves signal quality and capacity and simplifies the headend.

Can cOS run DOCSIS and PON together?

Yes. Harmonic’s cOS platform supports DOCSIS alongside GPON, XGS-PON and Combo PON, managed from the same platform. This lets operators move subscribers to fiber step by step on one broadband core.

Who is Harmonic’s partner in Kosovo and Albania?

Creative Solutions is Harmonic Gold Partner for Kosovo and Albania. Creative Solutions and Harmonic have implemented cOS broadband technology in the region.
